Likewise, I didn't know what a SLR really was until late last year. I grabbed a Rebel Xsi (about the same level as your D70) from Costco at their Thaxgiving sale. Then I went online to learn about this thing when some nice fellow lead me to this club. Yes, experience has been great. As many have said, the mind behind is more important. Using relatively low end gears could be good for sharpening our minds, so I'll hang on till my mind qualifies for a Mark II.
As for low light, I bought a 50/1.4, which helps much at times.
