I think 宁欠勿过的法则 is still true. The trick is to ”Increase the exposure as much as you can
as long as you are not pushing beyong the right edge 勿过 of the histogram". Besides, knowing your camera's raw capability (like DaYan has indicated about his D3 capability) will allow you to be
more aggressive in increasing the exposure (or over-expose a little beyond the right edge) as long as you ARE SURE that you CAN recover that from the raw file. This "extra cushion" on the right varies from camera to camera's raw capability. So if one is not sure about that, then one should ensure that the exposure remain within the histogram range (勿过).
DaYan's original suggestion and your 宁欠勿过的法则 should both hold true (with the exception that the little over-exposure is acceptable depending on the camera's raw capability and ASSUMING that you are shooting raw).
However, the reason for "pushing to the right" is to keep the signal-to-noise level low (signal level much higher toward to bright side, i.e. the right side of historgram). If such photo is meant to be more of a low key style, then one is required to use the post-processing tool to re-adjust the exposure level to return it to more natural or the intended look. That is, pushing right to reduce noise for on location shooting may require one to spend some PP time afterward (i.e. time and effort) to regain the proper mood/style, if that is the case. Nothing is free.
DaYan, please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
