Harsh? That is because your flash appears to be stronger than the ambient light. You may need to reduce the flash power or reduce the shutter speed a little bit (i.e. slower). By reducing the shutter speed, you are actually changing the flash-to-ambient light ratio to lower ratio value.
Another way to reduce the hardness is to use a white board behind the flash and let it bounce off from it. However, since there is no ceiling/wall there you will be reducing a lot of flash power doing like that and you may run into not-having-enough-flash-light. If you have an assistance, have him/her hold a white board 45degree next to you and have the flash pointed to the board so that the light will bounce off the white board and land on the subject. This way, the light will be a lot softer and pleasant.
The trick is to mix the proper amount of flash/ambient light and to have the flash light appears soft (by converting it from a small flash head source into a much bigger source (the white board)
